Bhaskaran discovers novel way of selling art
ARTIST'S IMPRESSION: Renowned painter Bhaskaran with his illustrations on the cover of O V Vijayan's Thalamurakal. KOTTAYAM, Aug 1: Bhaskaran, the Delhi-based artist and illustrator from Kasaragod in Kerala who always has something special to offer to the world of arts, has done it this time by painting 2,000 different illustrations for the covers of renowned writer O V Vijayan's novel Thalamurakal (Generation).
The artist who devoted 20 days to complete these illustrations using water colour, feels that Kerala lacks proper art galleries to enjoy art exhibitions. Though many Malayali artists can be found in the fields of painting and illustration, they are essentially based in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore as it is only in such centres where they can have their work properly exhibited and sold.
This prompted Bhaskaran to use an innovative way of establishing an indirect art gallery so as to enable Keralites experience works of art through books.
As many as 2,000 persons purchasing the latest edition of Thalamurakal, published by D C Books, Kottayam, as well as thousands of other readers can thus appreciate the paintings of Bhaskaran.
While Vijayan in his literary work draws his theme from castes and clans, Bhaskaran treats the theme and characters in his own medium of painting. However, the medium used, whether water colour or oil painting, is only secondary to the message which the illustrator wants to convey to the readers, according to Bhaskaran. ``This is the first time such an effort was made by an artist,'' he says.
That there is relevance for hand-painted illustrations, even in the wake of today's sophisticated printing technology and computer graphics, is not to be wished away, says the artist. True to his words, his present works pronounce that the medium of painting and illustration has its say at all times.
Bhaskaran had successfully conducted an exhibition of paintings based on Vaikom Muhammad Basheer's first novel Balyakala Sakhi (Childhood Friend), in Delhi, in 1994. The collection of 100 paintings was exhibited at the Museum Art Gallery at Thiruvananthapuram, Calicut Town Hall and other places.
Bhaskaran's approach to the novel as an artist, response to Balyakala Sakhi as a reader and recording of his impressions through an independent interpretation was unique. Now he is being etched in the minds of all readers of Thalamurakal through his art.

പുറം തള്ളപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ രേഖകള്കാസരകോട് ജില്ലയില്‍ 1967- ഇല്‍ ജനിച്ചു . അവിട്ടം നക്ഷത്രം.
